Story

1917 in the midst of World War I, the young Portuguese soldier Zacarias is sent forth to the front line in Mozambique, Africa, in order to protect a colony from German threat. Zacarias heads off on a grand journey with allegiance at heart for his homeland, but comes down with malaria, is left behind by his troop, and becomes stranded. Delirious from fever he is summoned by his dreams, and wanders alone in an unknown jungle. Finally, he reaches a village of aborigines... Based on the true experiences of the director’s grandfather, the overlooked memories of war are told enweaving reality and fiction. Screened as the opening film for International Film Festival Rotterdam 2019.

João Nuno Pinto

[Director] Born in 1969, Mozambique. He moved to Lisbon Portugal shortly after the independence, at the age of 5. After commencing his career as art director in advertising, he moved to New York at 28 years old, then graduating from the New York Film Academy. He directs television commercials, music videos and short films, to then make his feature film debut with “América” in 2010, depicting an ironic look of contemporary Portugal through the eyes of illegal immigrants. In recent years he has been based in Lisbon and São Paolo.
