Three women, three struggles with maternity. A trilogy spanning from the Middle Ages to today.
A couple in medieval Macedonia is desperate for a child. They reach out to an old woman who says that the condition for helping them is to surrender their firstborn to her. The couple is now faced with a choice. Then the story fasts forward to today, where women still face various issues in their quest for motherhood. Manchevski's Willow, filmed back in his home country, is reminiscent of his Venice Golden Lion winner film Before the Rain.
