A story of 690 "last samurais" who fought agaist an army of five thousand.

Amid the civil war of the Bakumatsu era, karō Kawai Tsugunosuke of Nagaoka-Han, a small feudal domain in the Echigo region, aims for an armed neutrality policy for the sake of his people. However, peace talks break down, and Tsugunosuke decides to do the just thing which is to fight the army closing in from the west. The film is a silent yet powerful political drama with an intensity that changes Tsugunosuke, his family, the Han, and the entire movie into samurais. The karō, played by Koji Yakusho, is surrounded by naysayers, but he drags them – and the viewers – to battle with his spirited action.
