The ultimate marriage between the best Japanese literary classic and the most prominent sensibility. Directed by Yoshimitsu Morita and starring Yusaku Matsuda, the shocking work of literature by Natsume Soseki is made into a cinematic masterpiece.

1909, Meiji Era Japan. Thirty-year-old Daisuke, who calls himself an Educated Idler, was pressured by his family to get settled and have a family. One day, he receives a letter from his best friend Hiraoka. He was quitting his job and coming back to Tokyo, which meant that Daisuke would be seeing his wife Michiyo again. Daisuke used to love Michiyo secretly, but upon knowing that Hiraoka loved her too, he pushed Hiraoka to get married with her. Upon their reunion, Daisuke finds that Hiraoka has changed completely and has no qualms in nagging Daisuke for his way of living. On the other hand, Michiyo, while worn out from the roughness of life, was still gracefully beautiful. Daisuke runs about to rebuild Hiraoka’s life. Soon, he learns from his own efforts that he still loves Michiyo dearly.
