A vivid and curious end of colonialism in a microcosmos

The film takes place in a remote Indonesian island in the early 20th century – the final days of Dutch colonial rule. A powerful Dutch owner of a sugar plantation suddenly passes away. To maintain their privilege, his widow summons their son and his wife from the Netherlands to have them inherit the plantation. However, according to the late owner’s will, the person to inherit all of his assets was...? Unique visuals depict a chaotic power struggle intensifying with the death of a patriarch.

Ena Sendyarevich [Film Director]

Ena Sendijarević was born in Bosnia Herzegovina. She moved to Amsterdam in 2002 and graduated from the Netherlands Film Academy. After directing short films Travelers Into the Night (2013), Fernweh (2014), and Import (2016), she made her feature debut with Take Me Somewhere Nice (2019). The film was selected for ACID Cannes and won a Special Jury Award in the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Her second feature, Sweet Dreams, is shown in film festivals worldwide, including the Locarno Film Festival where the film premiered and the Netherland Film Festival where it won six awards.
