Paul Verhoeven [Film Director]

Verhoeven was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1938. He made his debut as a director with Wat Zien Ik? (1971) and was nominated for Academy Award for Best Foreign Film with Turkish Delight (1974). In 1977, Soldier of Orange was nominated for the Golden Globe Awards and scored worldwide acclaim. He started his Hollywood career with Flesh and Blood (1985) and worked on big hits including RoboCop (1987) and Starship Troopers (1997). One of those films, Total Recall (1990), won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. His 1992 film Basic Instinct (1992) became known for its explicit depiction of sexuality and propelled Sharon Stone into stardom. He has returned to the Netherlands since Black Book (2006) and, in 2016, directed Elle which competed for the Palme d’Or at the 69th Cannes Film Festival. The star Isabelle Huppert’s performance was highly acclaimed, leading to her nomination for the 89th Academy Award for Best Actress.
