Caravaggio: Baroque maestro and murderer? Witness the life of the genius who mastered light and shadow.
The story takes place in Italy through the 1600s, the time when Michelangelo Merisi, widely known as Caravaggio, lived. While being an outstanding artist, Caravaggio was branded sacrilegious by the Council of Trent. Upon finding out that Caravaggio has used prostitutes, thieves, and vagrants as models for church paintings, the pope requests the Shadow, a secret agent of the Vatican, to investigate the painter. Meanwhile, Caravaggio is sentenced to death for murder and requests a papal pardon.

Michele Placido [Actor, Film Director] Placido was born in Italy in 1946. In 1979, he won the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 29th Berlin International Film Festival for his performance in Ernesto. In addition to his longstanding acting career, he is also known as a director and screenwriter who made his debut with the 1990 feature film Pummarò. In Caravaggio’s Shadow which will be screened in Historica, he also plays the role of Cardinal Del Monte.
