The application for Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2012 is now open

Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2012 is a filmmaker’s development camp for young filmmakers. This program will provide the opportunity to meet outstanding filmmakers from both Japan and all over the world and the experience of samurai epic filmmaking. Kyoto Filmmakers Lab also aims to encourage Japanese filmmakers to participate the educational programs in abroad. Kyoto Filmmakers Lab will be the great opportunity for young filmmakers in the international trends of filmmaking rapidly changes.

The field of work to be accepted : Director, Producer, Cinematographer, Grip, Editor, Sound mixer, Music composer, Animator, Game designer, VFX designer

○ Hands-on “JIDAIGEKI”
It is a Hands-on training workshop of samurai epic filmmaking to make a 5 minutes length short film being shot in the open sets in Toei Studios Kyoto and Shochiku Kyoto Studios. Though out the workshop, participants will experience Kyoto’s traditional film assets include samurai epic film set, art direction, lighting and wardrobe as same as the equipments and facilities being used for feature films. This program is for filmmakers, game designers, animators or music composers as their professional level. All the participants will be required to take a role in either directional part or technical part for the samurai epic filmmaking workshop.

Other Information

• This program is a camp style workshop. Accommodation will be provided from December 8th to December 13th.
• Partial travel expenses (60,000 JP yen) will be provided for participants from outside of Japan.

Application Outline

【Participants Selection】

(1) Applicants must follow the rules and regulations to apply.
(2) Participants will be selected by the juries consist of film directors and film specialists.

(2) Please fill out the application form correctly and fully. We will send you confirmation number by e-mail after application screening.
(3) Please send us your DVD as a sample of work soon after you receive your confirmation number.
(4) Candidates selected for participation will be informed via email by early in November 2012.
(5) You have never attended Kyoto Filmmakers Lab before.
(6) We will not be able to issue VISA document this year. Please see the list of the countries (MOFA website) that have the visa exemption agreement with Japan before you apply. We apologize for any inconvenience.

【Applicants Eligibility】

(1) You are a film school graduate OR graduate in a film program, OR you have a professional experience in a film, videogame or animation industry OR you have made a shot film.
(2) We accept any nationality.
(3) You must be able to communicate in English.
(4) We do NOT accept team applications.
(5) You must be able to attend at least all 4 days program from December 10th to December 13th, 2012 (Camp Style Workshop)

【Sample of Work Submission Regulations】

(1) Your sample of works must have been completed after January 1, 2008.
(2) Your sample of work must be either a short film or an abridged version of your work within THREE MINUTES in length and in English or with English subtitles. (We do NOT accept any sample of work longer than THREE MINUTES.)
(3) Digital format files:
• MPEG2 (PS is not accepted), MPEG4 or QuickTime files are only accepted.
• Both NTSC and PAL are accepted.
• DVD discs need to be finalized.
• Your DVD should be clearly labeled with your name, confirmation number, title of your sample of work, your role in your sample of work, type of your DVD format, and e-mail address or phone number.
(4) Applicants are only allowed ONE sample of work per entry.
(5) You can send anything you think is worth showing.
(6) All materials submitted for sample of work will not be returned.

【Kyoto Filmmakers Lab Agreement】

(1) The sample of work copyright belongs to applicants.
(2) We do NOT take any responsibility for a sample of work without copyright management.
(3) The participant hereby agrees that his/her photograph and data may be published on the website and in the magazine of Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2012.
(4) The participant agrees that his/her sample of work submitted to Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2012 may be shown publicly at Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2012 and streamed on the website of Kyoto Filmmakers Lab and related organizations.
(5) For the avoidance of doubt, this agreement shall be governed by and construed under the laws of Japan.

The Kyoto Filmmakers Lab respects each person’s right to privacy. We do NOT sell or distribute personal information or your samples of work for commercial purposes. Your application data and your sample of work will be treated confidentially. Only the staff of the Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2012 has access to your application data.
